I'ver never liked the Mac version of Basecamp, but then again, I've never used it very much. Every time I try to use it on a Mac I get frustrated and go back to Windows. SO...now I'm facing a world of that being my only Basecamp, unless I go down the "Running Windows on a Mac" path. What do you Apple-y people do? Does anyone love Basecamp on Mac like I love Basecamp on Windows? Jerry From gnicoud3 at icloud.com Tue Aug 15 13:14:42 2023 From: gnicoud3 at icloud.com (Trey Nicoud) Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2023 13:14:42 -0700 Subject: [BaseCamp] Basecamp Mac vs. Windows versions In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi Jerry, I've been without access to a Windows computer for 4 and half years now. For many years, I loved using Basecamp on Mac and had few problems. Sadly, as Apple kept updating its operating systems and as Garmin stopped supporting Basecamp, the experience has steadily gotten worse, to the point that I have pretty much given up trying to use Basecamp (or any other Garmin product) on a Mac. It's not just that Basecamp is unreliable on the Mac--I usually cannot get a Mac to "see" a Garmin device so I can transfer waypoints and routes to the Garmin. (From numerous phone calls with Garmin tech support, I suspect that the USB ports on Macs, especially laptop Macs, don't send enough power to the Garmin.) For a while I would take the micro SD card out, put that in a card reader, transfer the files to the card, and then put the card back in the Garmin, but now that doesn't seem to work either. Because of my Mac not "seeing" my GPS, I haven't tried the "running Windows on a Mac" approach. I hope you have better luck than I've had, Trey > On Aug 15, 2023, at 12:37 PM, Jerry White wrote: > > Life is changing and I'm about to no longer own a Windows computer. I was able to connect my XT to the Macbook and get it to install the current mapset to the laptop, so that seems encouraging. But I'm getting a different laptop soon and we'll find out if it will see the XT. In the meantime I'm trying to get to know non-Basecamp ways to save waypoints and create routes. So far I'd say Google is obviously not made for people who like to geek out on their routes. I think Mike Brooke doesn't use a dedicated GPS and I sure would like to learn his techniques. What are you doing since you're no longer using Basecamp? I've tried Google, Rever, and Scenic, but none lets me store a library of waypoints that I can then use in different routes. I've also tried the BMW Connected app, which has yet to make it more than an hour without the map display failing. So I'm mostly back to paper maps and handwritten notes. Please post a solution if you find one. Good luck! Trey P.S. to Ashley: I have tried powered USB hubs (several), but was unsuccessful in getting the Mac to see the Garmin. > On Aug 15, 2023, at 4:01 PM, Jerry White wrote: > > Thanks Trey.
