I've just returned home from the longest trip this season. I so happened 
- by pure coincidence - that I had to attend a work-related meeting in 
Salzburg, Austria last week, and in the weekend that followed this 
meeting was the yearly GPZ-Treffen in the Austrian Alps, just 80 km 
south of Salzburg. Because I had the time to do it, I decided to travel 
all the way to Salzburg on ordinary roads, without riding one single 
kilometre on the Autobahn. I split the 1100 km (684 miles) into three 
with overnight stays at small hotels. Germany is such a nice country 
with good people, good food, good beer and gorgeous roads many places, 
and is a shame always just to race through on the Autobahn. I had the 
nicest 3-day ride in wonderful late summer weather with sunshine from 
sunrise to sunset. After Salzburg I picked a route that took me to my 
final destination via Berchtesgaden and the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse - a 
very famous bike route in the most southern part of Germany. For several 
years now the GPZ has actually been a minority at the GPZ-Treffen's, but 
this time mine was the only GPZ out of 15 bikes. We had the nicest ride 
to the Grossglockner, also in sunshine, but I had to quit the ride the 
next day due to a severe cold. Cold or no cold, I had to get home and 
get to work, so the trip home was a one-day trip, 1198 km (745 miles) on 
the Autobahn, basically non-stop other than to eat and refuel. The 
Autobahn can be notorious for its Stau's (queues) that can pop up of 
nowhere and last for hours or many, many miles, and this time was no 
exception. Nevertheless, almost 1200 km in 15 hours is not bad at all. 
Was my butt sore? Yes. Was I cold? Yes. Would I do it again? Yes, after 
all it wasn't that bad, but I'd never do an iron butt just for fun ;)

Btw, my GPZ now has 183.000 km (113.735 miles) on the odo and still 
going strong :)
