From scapco at ecentral.com Sun Jan 13 21:58:42 2019 From: scapco at ecentral.com (Charles Scappaticci) Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2019 21:58:42 -0800 Subject: 2019 Maintenance and Riding Message-ID: I thought I'd post to see if anyone was still out there as I haven't seen a post in a while. After a two year experiment with my BMW F800GT, I've decided to sell it this spring and find something different. It's a blast in the corners with fresh rubber and really not a bad bike, but it just isn't what I really wanted. Wish I could keep it for the local canyons, but alas I can't do that right now. I will either look for a Concours 14 or possibly a mid 2000's BMW 1200GT. I'd prefer the Connie of the two. I will also look at a classic Kawasaki as I really miss the restoration work I used to do. Since I've apparently decided to keep to keep the Geeper until I die, I'm going to do some work on it this spring. I did a lot last spring (valve and cam chain adjustment, spark plugs, rear brakes, all new dash lights and a new shifter shaft seal) and am going to get some more done when it warms up. I've been stuck in San Francisco for the past two months with another one to go before I go home, working a consulting job, but it's given me time to look for a few things for it. I bought a nice gas tank from a guy in Spain and will swap it out this spring along with a lot of worn screws, bolts and such. I am going to pull the swing arm, repack the bearings, rebuild the shock linkage and replace the Race Tech'ed OEM shock with my Koni. I might replace the chain and sprockets as well while I have it apart and I will go ahead and replace my nearly 6 year old battery with a fresh one. Most of my money last summer went into performance and suspension mods on my "new to me" Mustang GT, but this is the year to work on the GPZ and find that next one. I likely won't take any more really long adventure trips on the GPZ due to the difficulty in getting parts if I break down somewhere, but it has never let me down in 21 years of ownership and I will work to keep it that way. It runs good. I need a shift shaft seal, also. I think the carbs need to be cleaned, too. Otherwise it’s still great. I keep looking at a new Ninja 1000 on my showroom floor, but I really can’t justify buying it, especially with the crappy money I make working at this dealership. Hopefully that all will change soon. I wouldn’t mind getting that Ninja 1000, especially now that I’ve broken 100,000 miles on the YZF600. I promised myself when I broke 100K I’d buy a new bike, but I don’t really see it happening this year. If I sell my two Kawai’s I might do it, but I’m not sure I want to go that route. Time will tell. Ralph L. I also need to look through the cooling system as it tends to get hot and the fan kicks in quite quickly if traffic is slow or comes to a halt, even in autumn temperatures. The thermostat was replaced last year and I can't quite figure out why it still gets hot. Other than that, there are no signs why I shouldn't expect a trouble free 2019. Regarding your "overheating" issue, check the fuse and if it is blown check the fan for free rotation. Sometimes the cowling will move and stall the fan, which in turn blows the fuse and results in the overheating as you have described… worth a look and very easy to fix. I wish I had the fortitude to do the touring that you did in 2018 and the planned trips for this year. My body won’t cooperate with extended trips anymore and I need a lot of breaks to iron out the kinks…. This getting old has nothing to recommend it. Take Good Care, Art in TO. Gorge du Verdun, Stelvio Pass, Tuscany, awesome roads. The forks and shock will be upgraded to Wibers this year, for more Euro adventures. GPZ1100 is a great sport tour with givi side bags and trunk. Probably the valve cover gasket. I need to check the valves anyway. I installed an in-line gas shut off valve as my petcock is wonky. I did put a K&L rebuild kit in it but, I still don't trust it. I still keep overloading my Ventura luggage rack so I have to repair that from time to time. I had to fix my ignition switch to fix a charging problem. I installed magnets in the gas tank as well as a fuel filter to help with rust in the gas tank. I'm planning on retirement this year so I won't be traveling to work in Cheyenne WY. Loveland CO is not that far a ride. So, I might not be using it much. -----Original Message----- From: GPZList [mailto:gpzlist-bounces at lists.micapeak.com] On Behalf Of Charles Scappaticci Sent: Sunday, January 13, 2019 10:59 PM To: Papenfuss, Steven R. Subject: [EXTERNAL] 2019 Maintenance and Riding I thought I'd post to see if anyone was still out there as I haven't seen a post in a while. I suspect that your radiator is starting to foul the surfaces inside. Corrosion products build up and contaminants and dissolved solids start to plate out, all of which insulates more and more and impedes heat transfer out. You could try doing a citric acid flush to see if it improves, and that is part of my normal annual maintenance routine now. When it comes to radiator fouling, it only ever gets worse over time. Good quality coolants designed for aluminum with a higher initial concentration of corrosion inhibitors added helps too. But it's generally a time dependent condition, not milage dependent. The next thing to check is the coolant pump. Just as the radiator gets fouled, those dissolved corrosion products and contaminants errode the pump impellor over time...less discharge pressure and lower flowrate results. Lower mass flow rate of coolant = lower heat transfer rate out of the radiator. I'm sitting at nearly 140,000 miles on my 1996 now. The largest maintenance headache I've had the last couple of years is bad gas gunking up the pilot jets, and the absolute pain of getting the carb bank in and out with slightly hardened and worn out carb boots. Other than that, it's just been tires, oil, coolant flushes, chain and sprockets, brakes, valve clearances, steering head bearings and wheel bearings. I did have to rebuild the rear brake master once when it started sticking and the fuel petcock...but that's it. Over 140K trouble free miles. I never did pay much attention to the coolant, other than to check the coolant level, because it always appeared to have the right colour and didn't seem to be clogged with deposits. I have changed it a few times to ensure that it wouldn't freeze in the winter, but I've never actually flushed the system with citric acid flush. This action is now on the maintenance list and I have looked around to see what flush products are available here. Thanks again! :) 140.000 miles - wow! It's that time! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gifts (in US dollars) can be made in two ways. The PREFERRED WAY is to use PayPal. Log into https://www.paypal.com/ and click the 'Send & Request' link at the top of your account summary page. In the white text box type: "marcl at micapeak.com" and click the 'Next' button. When PayPal asks 'What's this payment for?' click 'Sending to a friend', since you'll be making a donation, not buying anything. On the next page, fill in an amount and add an optional note if you wish. Click 'Continue' to finish up. We do prefer US dollars, but other currencies work too. That's it! And thanks in advance... The far LESS-desirable method is to send a check in $USD payable to "H M LEWIS" (not "micapeak", the bank doesn't like that) to: H M Lewis 4923 S Bellaire Ln Veradale, WA 99037-8220 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's the request. For most of you, this note is a familiar reminder. You know what to do, or not do, and you need read no further. NEWS: We moved micapeak.com, wetleather.com, etc. to Amazon Web Services (Lightsail) in 2018, and it's been working well for us. I think we've switched hosting companies at least 5 times since we started this. Here's hoping we have found home at last. That's the news for now. If you're still with me, however, I'll be a tiny bit more verbose about what the Pledge Drive is... The collection of domains (micapeak.com, wetleather.com, FJR1300.info, gpdndg.com, and a dozen other sites) and mailing lists which we collectively call "micapeak" is running well, thanks mostly to Carl's mailing list wizardry. We're still sending over one million e-mail messages every month connecting motorcyclists. 2019 marks the 24th year we've been doing this. So far, so good. :-) We renew our long-standing promise to keep micapeak.com, et al, running and free of charge, no matter what. But if you'd care to throw us a few bucks, we'd be grateful. Carl and I know that some of the folks for whom this mailing list is an important part of daily life would like to show their appreciation with a modest gift. We encourage you to think about how much time you spend each day following this list, or using micapeak's other resources. If it seems worthwhile to you, then please consider sending something. We will continue to operate the mailing lists, micapeak.com and other Websites for the foreseeable future (we even have sections in our wills to make sure the online stuff survives us). There is no obligation for you to send anything, and you'll continue to get the email and Webpages we serve for free. But we'd appreciate it if you'd help out... Thanks in advance! --hmarc & Carl SPECIAL NOTE: Let's not make this a topic of discussion on the mailing list, OK? Send us a gift or don't, as it suits you, but we have neither the time nor the energy to discuss the subject further than what you see above. And we're sure your fellow subscribers would rather not have the list itself cluttered with more than this notice on the subject. Thanks! (BTW -- I'll post this message just once more in about 2 or 3 weeks).
