your email didn't come through.  I only saw the reply from Chris.
Hmmm.      Anyhow, how I make two routes into one combined route is:
1.  select the first route desired, right click and Duplicate.
2.  select the second route desired, right click, select Duplicate.  Thus,
the originals are preserved.
3.  highlight one of the duplicates, then hold down Control key and left
click the mouse over top the other duplicated route.  Now both are
highlighted.
4.  right click over either one and select Join The Selected Routes.
Presto, chango, it's done.
