[BaseCamp] Mieage mismatch in route detail v. ruler

If it's your first rally I would suggest not relying 100% on the computer
for routing. Always confirm with paper maps, or other sources such as
google, etc. As you just found, Basecamp has errors. One of your most
useful rally skills is having an intrinsic sense of choosing a good route,
which comes from getting the big picture as laid out on map, or in your
head, not only on a screen. That's how in 09, Jim Owen knew he could stop
in Rand, CO, on his way to Michigan, but he had to leave immediately. Big
picture.
Sorry, this is a Basecamp list not a rally routing list. I guess the
Basecamp takeaway is - it's not always reliable, confirm with other
sources. Sometimes the reason it's not reliable is due to your routing
preferences. Check the settings in the "profile" you are using. Dirt roads
could be on or off, U-turns, etc.
One last story: I remember my first Utah 1088. The rally pack only
contained instructions for the first leg. At the checkpoint they
distributed the rest of the rally pack. I spent at least an hour in a
McDonalds with my computer and Streets & Trips. Other riders came and went
because they had paper maps, and were able to get a sense of their routes
much more quickly. That was a huge lesson for me. Don't get wrapped around
the axle with computer shit. Route fast, and keep the wheels turning!
