From ironbutter at gmail.com Fri Dec 21 05:34:27 2018 From: ironbutter at gmail.com (saddle sore) Date: Fri, 21 Dec 2018 08:34:27 -0500 Subject: [BaseCamp] tracks converted to routes Message-ID: Viewing a track on BaseCamp, I see the track points (via points??) as black dots along the track. Converting the track to a route, then opening the properties box, none of those track/via points are converted to waypoints except the beginning and ending points. Yet, the turn by turn directions indicate every track/via point registered in the track to route conversion. The map will show that the route line follows the track line exactly. But the properties box does not give me that confidence. Is there a way to get those track/via points to become waypoints? Since I use older GPS devices, for now, I am manually dropping in enough waypoints onto the route to ensure my device does not 'recalculate' and get me off the intended route, which is the original track. I've not played around with it ever before. So after multiple tries to figure out what exactly GPSBabel was doing (it was not user friendly or intuitive to this user) I got it to work!! Their user guides that I could find on-line seem to be a bit on the technical side of the explanation. Since I don't use these things enough to often remember from time to time how I got what I wanted the last time, I jotted down the "instructions" for myself and saved them. Here's the process I used to successfully convert track points to way points. Jerry, check it out!!! https://drive.google.com/open?id=1uogp_l6PMrzqhz_UZjRtqAqRTUEhhg-E Thanks for the help!! Joe Y. So, the built-in Goldwing GPS ideally wants 'routes' and 'trackpoints'.  The *only* way I was able to sort it out was a combination of messing around with the output of GPSBabel, then feeding those into both BC and the bike.  That took me *weeks* to get smart enough to do that. He wanted to convert BDR tracks to routes and add in their POIs (campgrounds, gas stations, restaurants, etc...) I walked him through GPSBabel and converted all the original trackpoints to waypoints. Good so far. Since the BDR guys didn't have any of their POIs actually part of their tracks, the POIs had to be selected separately and moved into a BC List with all the waypoints. Still all good. Then there was an attempt to add few POIs to the route. Now, mind you, the trackpoints were converted to waypoints and the track was converted to a route. So when you open the properties box, the waypoints appear just like in any other route. And on the map, the route follows the roads, exactly. So, what was the result of adding a few POIs into the route using the green "plus" sign in the properties box? Disaster. While all of the converted waypoints are connected by roads, the added in POIs are connected by straight lines. However, if I just went in and created a new route in BC of the POIs and some of the trackpoints now converted to waypoints, that route followed the roads perfectly. Any thoughts as to why adding POIs to a route does not follow roads, but creating a route from POIs does? I'm confused. The straight lines to the POIs do not change to follow any roads, they just stay straight lines (and there are roads clearly leading form the designated route to these POIs). No matter where in the route I move the POIs, there are just straight lines between the waypoint and POI. With the route open, try switching between whatever profile is being used and Direct, then go to Motorcycling (or Driving or Hiking, etc). Also maybe try this with all of the waypoints selected in the Edit Route window... BTW, in case you cannot tell, I am grasping at straws here but something is telling BC to route those segments directly... :-) -- There is no need to tailgate me when I am doing 50 in a 35... and those flashing lights on top of your car look ridiculous.
