balancing carbs

Has anyone balanced the carbs on their GPz before? According to the service manual you are supposed to remove the tank and somehow set up an external tank and hook it up to the carburetors. How have others handled this? Did you use the tank that came with the bike. Did you set it up to gravity feed by switching the fuel valve to prime? Any ideas here would be great.
