Plug wire questions

Call out to anyone who has changed their plug wires/boots

I'm using the NGK #SD05F 5ohm plug boots that Murph has for the Concours 
(Same engine top end) and they are about  1" too short.  The grommet 
that seals off the plug well will not fit.  It has to be there to seal 
the well from water, right?

See attached photo.

If the grommet is left out, the new boot sits in the well so far that it 
cant be pulled out.
those of you who have replaced plug wires, how did you do this?
