As I recall WWII piston engined  fighter aircraft used a water injection 
(stricty emergency like someone tossing 20 mm cannon shells up your ass) as 
a last resort power boost over and above the double compressors.  It was 
supposed to be a short burst item to give you 25 - 50 mph enough to get you 
out of effective range, but not esspecially good for engine life.  But Hell 
if I was in that position  wasn't my motor but it is my ass--give her.
