If you want HID you need a real HID bulb, there are a lot of very
inexpensive ~$50 kits out there now.  Beware of the "HID like" bulbs which
are just colored H4 Halogens and a total waste of money.  To that point
though I have the Sylvania Silver Star H4 on my Harley and actually like the
way it looks compared to the stock H4.  I'm still debating going HID as I
don't have a lot of room on the Harley for the Ballast but one would fit
easily on the GPZ where I had a modulator before it gave up the ghost.

I agree that lighting is only part of the equation.  I'm debating a new
helmet this year.  My old lid has a beautiful custom paint job, but I've
gained enough weight and (gone through some surgeries) and now the fit is a
bit beyond snug.  I thought of going with a plain white lid and having it
coated with the same reflective paint used on road signs, etc.  I've been
told, though, 3M (makers of the reflective paint) is currently about out of
the stuff.

But I'm also trying to improve forward lighting at night.  Living way out in
the countryside, I have to constantly be aware of the possibilities of
critters darting into the road.  I also ride primarily on secondary roads,
with poorly maintained markers and paint.  A little bit of rain turns them
into flat ribbons of inky blackness.  I don't want to blind oncoming
traffic, but I *do want to see the road more clearly.  If the whiter lighter
of the HID conversion helps, then cool.  As Arthur said, anyone with more
info or reliable links?  Has anyone used those fancy HID mimicking bulbs?*
