Hmmmm... Plastic gear prone to failure?  D'ya think?

Sometimes engineering and manufacturing choices are baffling.

I am currently pondering the engineering choice that Big K made with zx
liquid cooleds and their counterbalancer.  They just stuck the old shaft
through the engine case, and it's like whoever was designing it said..
I know, let's just pinch the thing with a little arm on the outside and 
Plug up the hole with a seal.  

Not that it's a problem, and the the thing works, but it's just interesting.
It is such a mickey-mouse solution when you look at it in perspective, you

No not a pain just that EFI was better for modification and no carb icing as
they were prone to. 
The D and E models had a plastic gear driving the oil pump which was prone
to failure some were changed under warranty most not. They updated to EFI on
the F model and also upgraded the plastic gear to a steel one in 99 or 2000.


As long as you are aware of the problems and know what to look for when
buying, they are still fine bikes.

What year did the Vulcan come out with EFI? Are the late 90's Vulcans with
carbs a pain?
