You might also wanna check the connections at the fuse box.
My bike crapped out earlier this year and I wore the battery down trying to start it.
It turned out to be a problem at the fuse box. I noticed one of the wire bundles was twisted at the fuse box and after untwisting it and replugging it in, the bike started.
I carry a spare fuse box now just in case IT was the problem,,

I'm with Jim on this one. If voltage is below the necessary minimum, it'll crank all you want but won't fire.

Hi,
I'm starting off with the simplest problem for my bogging down under
hard acceleration. (Also, the filler cap whistles for a couple of
minutes after I stop, so I'm guessing an obstructed fuel tank air vent.)
I have no air line so how do I clear the air vent ?
Just poke a wire/pipe cleaner down it ?
I want o check there isn't some clever diaphragm that I'm going to break.
Where does the hole go to? Just a couple of centimetres directly into
the tank?

at a hell of an angle.
Would someone mind checking theirs for me. Mines 22.5cm from heel to
centre of mounting bolt.
If I want a longer one what will fit ?

Depending on where you live, if your season is almost over, it might be
worth waiting till spring to get a new battery.

You can have someone weld a piece of metal onto the bottom of the stand.
Might be cheaper.

My gas cap does the same and it's not a problem. It's just your
tank venting off pressure. I have had other bikes do the same. The was
a fix on the Honda site I once read where you cut one coil off a
spring inside your gas cap so the pressure would bleed easier causing
it not to whisle.
I think your vent is not your problem.

However, I too thought it leaned way too much and the little footprint
would easily dig in on soft ground so I had a friend weld a plate onto
the footprint of the side-stand like this:

Its probably worn at the pivot. Does it move up and down more than a few mm
when in the out position. If it does you could try shimming it or tightening
the bolt but not too tight as the snap easily.
