Hard (impossible) to start

I'm going to get a Gel cell when the one I have dies.  Turns out the same
battery fits in the GPZ that they use in Vrods.  The Vrods had to have gel
as the battery is mounted sideways.  I got mine for ~$70 from Bohanon
battery online, it's the ETX14.

Battery is about 1.5 years old, but it was a Wal-Mart battery (all I could
afford at the time).
I'm wondering if a gel battery will improve its chances.

How old is your battery?  I found that I had to replace my battery in the 
GPz every 3 years on average.  The bike doesn't like a low battery or a weak

one even if it is fully charged.  One thing you can try to check is to try 
to jump start the bike with your car or truck.  If it fires right up invest 
in a new battery.
