GPZList Digest, Laam and Corbin seats

Hello, all

I had a Corbin made almost the moment I bought the GPZ (which I've come
to call "the ZX" because dealer parts men know the bike as a "ZX1100E")
back in August '01 and used it for more than 90,000 miles. Then I
bought Tim's Laam and put that on last year.

The trouble with me reviewing the Laam is that it hasn't really been put
to a hard enough test yet, mostly due to what we euphemistically call
"life changes". Most of my saddle time in the last couple years has
been on my old GL1800 because in my new digs, I can only keep one bike
in the home garage. The GL is the one that the Boss insists upon, so
the poor ZX is often in storage unit exile.

So, the Laam has not seen even a 400 mile (650km) day, much less
anything like a 1000 mile (1600km) weekend in my nether region.

Actually, the Corbin was absolutely superb for me and the only reasons I
went for Tim's Laam were curiosity and the old Corbin getting kind of
tatty-looking at the seams. Corbins were rock-hard when they were made
and got only a little harder. I, on the other hand, ended my 40-year
carpenter career in '12 and am certainly no longer rock-hard myself.

My initial impression of the Laam was softness, although not excessively
so. I do like the dishing-out-wider shape as providing more support. I
think I have a little bit more trouble reaching the ground than with the
Corbin, which is way better than the OEM seat in that regard.

I especially disliked the OEM seat because of the sensation of sitting
on the narrow edge of a 2x6. The Corbin's shape eventually proved to be
nearly perfect for me. A little skootch forward at stops and low
speeds, a little slide back to the pocket for full support when in
constant movement. Not a problem. And the Corbin worked- I racked up
plenty of 500+ mile days (800km) during my prime and had a long of 830
miles (1335km) without much posterior agony.

In the current times, the Laam is doing a fine job with the very large
benefit of having a superior pillion. The Missus would not ride on the
Corbin's rear any further than the next town; on the Laam, she'll go
until her surgically-repaired knees (former volleyball hotshot)
complain, but it isn't the saddle that's the problem.

If I was heading out at sunrise to go to Pittsburgh for breakfast
tomorrow, I'd use either seat and probably be fine either way.

Does that help?

If I was realistic, I'd offer to sell my old Corbin to our newcomer
friend so that he could get it re-done but something makes me want to
keep it. You know, just because.
