Who's left? GPZList Digest, Vol 129, Issue 2

Hey guys,
I have been MIA for at least 8-9 years, though still getting the list.
Needless to say, I’ve been busy.
But I had a few minutes and starting going thru the last few weeks of the Digest.
Yes, I still have my GPZ. My kid is 27, and he tried to buy it off me, but I am hanging on to it.
I haven’t started it in at least 5 years. No gas in the tank, since the petcock diaphragm gave out and leaked all the gas out, which I guess is good.
Never intended to just leave unattended. Shit happens.
So I hope to try and get it going again here in the next couple months.
So I will be begging for advice.
Good see familiar names still on the list, especially Charles S.

Mine is 10 years gone. I couldn't afford to insure 2 bikes in Canada
when I toured the trans - Labrador highway with Steve back in '08.
With the cost of insurance here you need to be Pablo Escobar to insure
2 bikes. The GPZ was not the bike for 1500 km of gravel roads so I
sold it & bought a Suzuki Vstrom.. Then the Suzuki Vstrom wasn't the
best either.
I may see Scap in a week or so. he's going to bike week in Daytona &
I'm hiding from the Canadian winter in South Daytona.

We had a super nice weekend in Colorado weekend before last, so I took
advantage of the weather to get the street bikes out for a little work and
a short ride to blow the cobwebs out.
Saturday I pulled my BMW F800GT out to put a new battery in, as the
expensive Lithium one died in less than 8 months. I also wanted to try out
the new adjustable windscreen I put on it a month ago. Very happy with the
lesser amount of wind which will be nice in the spring and fall.
I got the GPZ out Sunday to put the new registration on and take it for a
short spin. Even after nearly 21 years of ownership, it still manages to
put a smile on my face when I crank the throttle back and let it go. Now
that I have decided to keep it, I’ve got to do some work on it starting
with a valve adjustment, cam chain tensioner adjustment, new plugs, an oil
change and a carb sync. I will also start saving for a valve job as it’s
burning a little oil these days.
Interestingly, I found a set of Givi bag mounts for my BMW that will allow
me to put the GPZ’s bigger hard bags on it. The BMW’s bags are nice and
very well integrated, but only hold 55 liters and aren't really big enough
for a long trip. The European GPZ bags I got via Bob Sims many years ago,
are 72 liters and I can also use my small 21 liter Givi’s on the same
mounts. It will be interesting to see how it all works once I get them
mounted.
Here’s a picture on the big red rocket taken last Sunday. Glad to see
quite a few listers still have their GPZ's.
Jim, I look forward to dinner with you and your better half a week from
this Saturday on the 10th in Daytona Beach.

I've thought about selling the big ol' girl several times, and even listed it FS once, briefly, before coming to my senses. I realized long ago that it's worth much more to me than anyone else, so I'm keeping it. At this point, the initial purchase price divided by years of ownership is down to $270/year, so how can I lose?
The bike is rock solid in so many ways that I've always had a hard time finding fault with it. My Report card after 20 years of ownership:
Price to value = A+
Long distance rides = A+
High speed sweepers = A+
Backroads = A
Tight technical riding = C+
Ride comfort = A* (* = equipped w/ GenMar risers and Russell daylong saddle)
Ease of maintenance = A** ( ** = carb R&R = D)
Cost of ownership = A (maintenance, insurance, & registration)
Fuel economy = A (because 42mpg running E10 in a 560 lb, 1100cc bike is awesome in my book!)
Dependability = A+ (insert sound of me knocking on wood)
Style/Looks = A (in a 90's sort of way lol)
Power/Acceleration A+
Passenger accommodations = A
Luggage = B- (the OEM "hard" bags look great and are roomy enough, but additional effort is req'd to keep contents dry)
Tire wear = B- (front always seems to cup, regardless of brand)
Weight = C ( at 560 lbs kinda porky, my only legitimate gripe)
Overall, this bike is great and I have never regretted buying or owning it. I've often thought (and even said out loud a few times) that if I had to sell all my bikes, the GPz would be the one I'd keep. Alas, since acquiring my '80 CB-X in 2003, the concept of selling all except one might be a bit more difficult to accomplish, because the X is such a deliciously complicated, yet brilliant piece of machinery, and fun to boot, so it would be very difficult to part with it.

It sucks that you had to let go of a second bike (just) because of insurance costs. Why is insurance so costly in Northern America? Are you insuring fully or just liability?
