I left Colorado in Sept of 2015 and toured down to Ushuaia then back up to Bueno Aires where I sold it. I left Amsterdam this past July on an NX250 and crossed to Morocco in August. I am currently in Ivory Coast. I hope to make it to Cape Town then back up to Cairo on the east coast. Wish me luck. The NX is a versatile bike. I like it for many reasons. Hi Steve, I agree! The NX will keep up where most smaller (older) bikes don’t, it’s nice and light, easy to pick up, bulletproof, cool looking… just a bit short for the taller folks though. Needs a corbin, or anything but stock, for long trips too. Tracy And John, I’m fine with selling the white NX for Alex. It was registered and running a couple of summers ago. I think it would need some brake work and a carb clean (if you want to have a winter project for the two of you). It’s time to clean out some of the less used bikes I think. But as you said, “if you can find one.” It took me about four years to find one within a day’s drive that was in decent shape with low miles. I ride my TA with a friend who has an 1150GS. We don’t try anything more difficult than a dirt road when Mike’s on his GS. For more challenging terrain he has a DR-Z400 and I a CRF250L. The big adventure touring bikes spend 95% of their time on pavement. I think the only time I’d want one is if I lived out west and had 1000’s of acres of open terrain to explore. Even then, a smaller bike like the Transalp or 650 V-Strom would be fine. However I would probably upgrade the suspension. If I want power, I take the FJR. Mach 3 is no problem. Speaking of suspension, have any of you upgraded the suspension on your Transalp? I changed to a heavier fork oil but that seems to have had a minimal effect. Progressive springs? Olins or Racetech rear shock? Any info is appreciated. Thanks. One has a Tiger 800 and the other either a BMW 650 GS or a BMW 800GS. I've also ridden with guys with big GSs and old GSs (like the BMW Bumblebee posted here recently. I've ridden the Tiger 800 and it's insane. It makes So. Much. Power. Other big ADV bikes seem similar. The big ADV bikes like the Tiger just make more power than I want. I've never taken the TA someplace where power was the issue getting though. All that stuff, the traction control etc. is nice on the road where these bikes are mostly used. The traction control is a bit nuts. You can dial it in so you slide the rear just enough to look a hero leaving every corner. The little 650 GS seems like a very handy little bike. The most TA like IMHO. The old TA comes with a big bonus, Price, if you can find one. Even an expensive one would be $3500. That Tiger is maybe $15,000 more. The TA is also vintage, weird, a Honda (so it works). As scared as I am of breaking unobtainable plastic I am not sure I'd be wanting to go where I have gone with a $20,000ish motorcycle. In the end a lot comes down to what kind of tires you have. That winds up being the limiting factor on a lot of rides. Just got back from a 4 day tour of the Colorado Rockies and it was great everywhere. Suggestion for the day - If you have a TA take it to Race Tech and have them upgrade the front forks. Not cheap but it was the best $$ I've spent on a bike. Totally got rid of the squishy ride and the ugly dive when hitting the front brake. Much better handling in corners on the street and much more confidence in the dirt. The only problem is that I didn't realize how blown out the rear shock was until I got the front upgraded. That will be a project for the winter. J. On Mon, Sep 30, 2019 at 10:42 AM Adam N. wrote: > I've been riding with a couple of guys with more modern ADV bikes. It was already imported and titled. I got it from a friend who gave me a very good price so that he could buy a new AT. I rode it home (CT) by way of the Grand Canyon and the Copper Canyon in Mexico. I found out the hard way that they can eat voltage regulators. I'm in the process of freshening the engine and adding upgrades like aluminum radiators and Arrow exhaust. New Ohlins shock and fork upgrades when the engine is back together. This and my TA are the keepers in my garage. And my '77 Bonneville that always puts a smile on my face! J. J. J.
