Rule number 1 on electronics

Don’t let the smoke out! Once the smoke has been released, it’s already too late.

I'll also mention that most of the bike mechanics I've known are terrible with electrical gremlins.

A continuity test between the rotor commutator & the brush wires should have been one of the first things your mechanic friend did to figure out why the BMW wasn't charging.

More likely the brushes were worn too short for the springs to provide correct tension. The springs aren't particularly tiny & I can't recall ever having to replace them. I've worked on my own & my customers Airheads for decades & haven't seen this issue. The 2 most common charging system failures are the rotor or the diode board. There have been aftermarket replacements available for 40 years that permanently solve the issues.

My cousin’s husband is a self-taught motorcycle mechanic. He can put a bike together (including the engine) from a pile of parts, without an owner’s manual. He has a 1988 R100GS which is one of his daily riders. While on a trip, the battery stopped charging and his wife had to push him to start the bike. It took him 2 years to figure out that the tiny springs which put pressure on the contacts in the alternator were fatigued, causing the battery not to charge.

My 1976 BMW R90/S has 110,000 miles on it. Original starter, original universal. Owned MANY BMW Airheads over the years & never had a universal fail but there were some issues in the 1990s with the GS/R series. Same for the starters. Bosch starter same as a VW bug up to early 1990s then they went to a Valeo which had issues. The last few years of Airhead production 92-95 lots of weird electrical issues. The R models were the worst for some reason. My personal favorite Airhead is the long wheelbase 1973 R75/5 which is why I still own one. Bought my 1976 R90/S new and rode it all over the U.S., Canada & northern Mexico back in the no cell phone days. Put on 30,000 miles in the first 18 months. Never left me stranded anywhere.

It’s a BMW. It’s going to break down. I owned a 1992 R100R which has the same engine. The alternator stator went, then the universal joint at the wheel end of the driveshaft blew up while doing 70 on the interstate. The starters are weak and fail often. The diode boards also have a bad track record. Valves need adjusting every 3000 miles. Oil filters are proprietary and expensive. Don’t waste good money on one of these boat anchors.

How would you say it compared to the TA?

They were built from 1988 -1995 when Airhead production stopped. Someone has updated the front forks big time! Owned an 88 with the full PD kit for ten years.
