From marcl at micapeak.com Thu Feb 4 14:05:28 2021 From: marcl at micapeak.com (Marc Lewis) Date: Thu, 4 Feb 2021 14:05:28 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Tanx] 2021 micapeak.com Pledge Drive final notice Message-ID: <20210204220528.61259FE7B2@lists.micapeak.com> This is the FINAL solicitation for donations to the upkeep of micapeak.com for the year. I won't bug you again until Jan, 2022. (micapeak powers this mailing list, Web sites & other services) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gifts (in US dollars) can be made in two ways. The PREFERRED WAY is to use PayPal. Log into https://www.paypal.com/ and click the 'Send & Request' link at the top of your account summary page. In the white text box type: "marcl at micapeak.com" and click the 'Next' button. When PayPal asks 'What's this payment for?' click 'Sending to a friend', since you'll be making a donation, not buying anything. On the next page, fill in an amount and add an optional note if you wish. Click 'Continue' to finish up. We do prefer US dollars, but other currencies work too. That's it! And thanks in advance... The far LESS-desirable method is to send a check in $USD payable to "H M LEWIS" (not "micapeak", the bank doesn't like that) to: H M Lewis 4923 S Bellaire Ln Veradale, WA 99037-8220 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's the request. For most of you, this note is a familiar reminder. You know what to do, or not do, and you need read no further. The collection of domains (micapeak.com, wetleather.com, FJR1300.info, gpdndg.com, and a dozen other sites) and mailing lists which we collectively call "micapeak" is running well, thanks mostly to Carl's mailing list wizardry. We're still sending over one million e-mail messages every month connecting motorcyclists. 2021 marks the 26th year we've been doing this -- we're so happy 2020 (AKA the Year of the Dumpster Fire) is behind us. Carl and I know that some of the folks for whom this mailing list is an important part of daily life would like to show their appreciation with a modest gift. We encourage you to think about how much time you spend each day following this list, or using micapeak's other resources. If it seems worthwhile to you, consider making a gift in proportion. We renew our long-standing commitment to keep micapeak.com, et al, running and free of charge, no matter what. There is no obligation for you to send anything, and you'll continue to get the email and Webpages we serve for free. But all small gifts are appreciated, and larger ones in proportion :-) Thanks in advance! --HMarc & Carl SPECIAL NOTE: Let's not make this a topic of discussion on the mailing list, OK? Send us a gift or don't, as it suits you, but we have neither the time nor the energy to discuss the subject further than what you see above. And we're sure your fellow subscribers would rather not have the list itself cluttered with more than this notice on the subject. Thanks! The larger disk gives better stopping power and much better feel. I know a lot of people have these and can comment on the resulting performance. The stock caliper, pads, and lines are retained. You will have to buy a new disk. I use a Galfer wave rotor. I added braided SS lines but they are not required and can be added later if you want. Remove brake rotor and replace with Hawk GT rotor 3. Unbolt brake caliper - DO NOT disconnect the brake line 4. Bolt adaptor to fork leg 5. Bolt caliper to adaptor. 6. Replace the front wheel 7. Be amazed at how much better the brake force and feel are Obviously use appropriate Loctite everywhere. New brake pads are suggested if the old ones are significantly worn. A friend just bought a CNC machine and needs a project to practice on. I told him I needed a spacer block for a TA and he said he'll do it using the one I have on my TA as a pattern. He has to get the power company to come in with 3-phase 240v power but when that's done he can get started. ETA is probably May so it's not a rush job. I don't remember what mine cost me but that was 30 years ago. I would expect the cost to be between $25 and $50 each. Cheap for the work to be done. Depends on how many people want them. I have used this setup with a Galfer wave rotor and really like it. They're out of California and provided an easy to use site & great service at good prices, start at $163/kit, with several choices of chain quality and sprocket sizes. I've become accustomed to endless chains which they don't offer so I purchased a small tool to press the master link plate eliminating the clip. I've became accustomed to pulling the swingarm for re-chaining enabling a thorough cleaning and inspecting the bearings. On my original Transalp of 55k mostly commuting miles I would need a new after 10,000 miles of every day hard riding regardless of  weather and our dirt roads, put up wet, which most likely shortened the chains life. All were DID's, endless sealed o-ring except one standard chain which wore out within 5,000 miles, at 1/2 the price thru Honda dealer at the time, and the second TA had a new gold plated chain which I thought enhanced the wear factor but most likely just looked nicer. At this time of chain change I went with the original specs as always, (almost chose to increase rear sprocket 2 teeth for more off road grunt) except choose Gold finish and will try to keep it cleaner and go for 20,000 miles as they claim is possible.  Hope this helps. I ran into this letter to Milt about another one of my *adventures*. I thought you might find it amusing during lockdown J. Sorry to hear about your crash Milt. You sound as if you are unhurt which is the main thing. I'm not sure what you mean by my "death march". We've christened that puddle (pond?) you decided not to cross as Lake Milt. If it will make you feel any better let me tell you my story of woe. The weekend before last my nephew and I were supposed to meet Dave at Whitcomb Summit for a ride to route sheet the rally loops. As usual I was late and Dave had given up on me and gone home. Owen and I unloaded the bikes, the Transalp for me and my MT250 for him. You may remember it because of its strawberry injector oil. I didn't bring the maps because Dave said he had some new routes and would bring his. Owen and I did the first loop from memory without problem. We refilled the 250 and took off on the 2nd loop. It went well but we had extra time before getting back to WS to meet Beth so I suggested we go exploring. Off down this road we went and didn't worry as it kept getting smaller and rougher. Finally we were down to single track when we came upon a couple of hikers. Since I was on the Transalp and Owen is a new rider I decided to get advice about what was ahead. After some discussion I decided to keep going. I was assured that the trail came out to a road at the bottom of a steep hill. The hikers seemed to think that we could make it down without too much difficulty. And they were right. It was steep but by being careful we got to the bottom with no problems. But that's where our problems began. Problem #1 - we lost the trail and it was too steep to go back up. After half an hour of mucking about we found a hiking trail and began to follow it. Problem #2 - the river. I was trying to decide how best to ford it since it was only about 20" deep and 30' across but Owen wanted to try the foot bridge. Good idea but the end of the bridge was 30" in the air. So we lifted the 250 pound MT up and onto it with only minimal grunting and took it across. Then came the 400 pound Transalp. With much huffing and puffing we finally got it up and across. Problem #3 - We are now on a hiking trail that had steep inclines with roots and sharp turns. Nothing you can get a run at and no traction. More pushing, huffing and puffing. Now it's getting late. And dark. Finally we just abandoned the bikes in the woods and walked out by flashlight. We must have walked a couple of miles before we got to the road and it all looked nasty. When we got to the road we flipped a coin as we had no idea where we were. A mile and a half later we came to a village and knocked on the first door we came to. A 75 year old woman came to the door and answered our plea for water and a phone. I called Beth on her cel phone and found out that she had called out the State Police since we were 2 1/2 hours overdue. The woman said that it would be easier for her to drive us to WS than to give Beth directions and have her get lost. What a kind soul! When we got to WS there were two cruisers waiting. I went to tell them we were OK but Beth got to me first and started giving me hell. The cops just stood there trying not to laugh at the shit I was getting. They probably thought that anything they were going to say was easy compared to what I was getting. Believe me, it was a very cold and silent ride home to CT. -- Aftermath -- I called Dave the next morning and asked if he would come help me get the bikes out of the woods. I knew where the trail ended and so we hiked in from there. Where it seemed like a mile or two at night it was less than half a mile in the morning. It must have been because it was pitch black and we were so exhausted. The bikes started ok and we pushed them up the first incline and got going. We got stuck a couple of times but nothing that was a show stopper. The big deal was that the trail was 6" wide next to a 25' drop into the river in a couple of places. Not a good place to slip or slide. Then we got to a spot where the Transalp was just not going to go. A slick slope with roots sticking out and a tree to go around. No amount of pushing a shoving was getting it up and over. Luckily I had brought a block and tackle so we put a tie down strap around a tree and then hooked onto the Transalp's frame. It finally budged. Just as we were getting going again a group of young (18-20's) hikers came by. The first informed us that motorized vehicles were prohibited on this trail. I explained that I had gotten lost and certainly had no intention on being here. She repeated that I wasn't supposed to be there and I tried to be reasonable. Finally, she led her merry band ahead but each one of the little tree huggers had to repeat that motorized vehicles were prohibited. Not one of them offered to help us and I was ready to wipe the smirk off the face of the last one with a tire iron. I can only hope that when one of them needs rescuing that I'm there to proclaim that motorized helicopters are prohibited and they can limp out with their broken leg. Dave and I finally got out from there without further incident and got the bikes loaded on my trailer. Dave got his map out and we checked it for the route Owen and I had taken. It started out as a double dashed line and then just ended. No single dashes or dotted lines, nothing until we got to the trail along the river. But we got through it in one piece. Beth calmed down after a few days of reminding me that this wasn't the first "adventure" I'd ever had. I must admit that I didn't know there were so many synonyms for "dumb" and "stupid". Owen wasn't too put off by it all and wants to try it again in the spring but probably with a map next time. I'm going to be working out with weights this winter so that I can pick up a Transalp single handed. Lastly, I'd still be there pushing the Transalp if it weren't for Dave's help. Thanks! I only wish I'd taken some pictures. ;) J. 31 Oct 2004 -- There's two theories to arguing with a woman, Neither one works. When you start fixing mechanical things and adding proper protection costs rise quickly. Pay now or pay later. I sold my R90/6 (not S) for $3400 (I bought it not running for $1400 but put dumb money in it to get it road worthy) to buy my TA with Adam's help and had money left over to pay for upgrades and fixes and still have some left over. . Beth refers to BMWs as Bavarian Money Wasters. I enjoyed it while I had it and put lots of miles riding all over the east coast with it. My $1800 TA will probably run close to Adam's estimate of $2700 after I add the essentials and work through minor mechanical issues. Carbs needed cleaning but it did ok before that. Minor hesitation off idle and slow warm up. One float height was low and an idle jet was clogged a little more than the other. I am able to do the work myself and enjoy doing so most of the time. It had less than 9,000 miles on the clock so the extra work should be worth the effort and cost. If someone doesn't have the time or ability to fix it themselves, $3500 is good money for something you WANT. In the process of checking my valves. What a PITA this is. Radiators off and carbs to get access to the valve inspection covers. Putting new plugs in while I'm down there too. I don't plan on ever doing that again till the bike makes me!! List of things I considered essential in a "turn key" TA: All regular maintenance up to date and no mechanical work needed. crash bars proper skid plate proper wrap around handguards relatively new tires (not 5 years old) Bonuses: luggage racks panniers top case (if you're into that kinda luggage) upgraded front disk brake Race Tech suspension upgraded rear shock tires that suit where you want to ride it other useful FARKLES . . . It's snowing again in NY. At least I'm not in Ted Cruz's jurisdiction! List of things I considered essential in a "turn key" TA: All regular maintenance up to date and no mechanical work needed. crash bars proper skid plate proper wrap around handguards relatively new tires (not 5 years old) Bonuses: luggage racks panniers top case (if you're into that kinda luggage) upgraded front disk brake Race Tech suspension upgraded rear shock tires that suit where you want to ride it other useful FARKLES . . . I can easily and visibly see when I need to adjust my chain, which isn’t often. The complexity and weight are not needed like they were in the age of open chains made from poor quality steel. Lots of electrical gremlins. Last of the Airheads & I guess BMW just said the hell with it. I used to hate to see one come in the shop. Don't judge all Airheads by that turkey. A good friend of mine put 250K on his 1977 R100S before he was killed last year when a car came around a corner in his lane in upstate N.Y.. I road all over the U.S., Canada & northern Mexico from 1976 up into the 1990s putting on over 100,000 miles on my R90/S & it always got me back home. They are both fruit /motorcycles but different. I've owned a couple of BMWs (R69S, R100RS) but only one Transalp. That said, the R100RS was every bit as reliable and enjoyable once Peter at Moto Bogotara straightened out the PO's lack of proper maintenance. When I sold it to Marcus last year he rode it back to NY without a problem. BMW made their reputation back when the choice was BMW or Triumph/BSA. They have had some stunning failures like the transmissions in 1977 that had to be replaced straight out of the crate. However, their customer service was such that the riders were able to look forward to a reliable, if unemotional, motorcycle. They have been able to market themselves as a premium brand with premium prices. Moreover, they have broadened their product line while retaining their image. Something that Harley Davidson must envy. Chains vs shafts, potAYto, potAHto. Each has benefits and drawbacks. On the RS a shaft drive was fine. On my Aprilia RST the chain has been equally excellent. I think it's more a matter of personal preference for the bike than any choice of drive. I.E. I would choose a GS or Africa Twin because of the overall features of the bike rather than solely because of the drive mode. Today, I'll be working on my '65 Honda Scrambler to get it ready for spring. It has weak suspension, a lumpy engine, and a seat made out of the very finest mahogany! It has Dunlop K70s that let me ride pavement or back-country gravel roads. It puts a huge smile on my face which is the whole point of owning a motorcycle for me. Everything else is just details. J. >> -- Aftermath -- >> I called Dave the next morning and asked if he would come help me get the bikes out of the woods.
