Correct.

If I get a bike it will be a dedicated ice bike.  Probably a CRF150.
Nobody I know around here ride street anymore. FWIW I can still probably do
a fall 2021 TA rally on a borrowed bike.

It was hard to let the TA go.  I have the right of refusal if Brian decides
to sell it. That sealed the deal or me.

IIRC, Varadero is Spanish for shipyard.  Waaay too big and heavy for

Agreed - I'm thinking of selling my Aprilia Futura so that I can buy this.
Strictly pavement with some graded county dirt roads. Remember we used to
rate them "Yo mama in a Corolla with bad words!"

how Europe understood better how bikes are actually used. I think that
because the postwar period was harder in Europe that the tradition of
motorcycles actually used as transport was carried later.  Also, they just
didn't have the wide open spaces of the United States.  Long distance
didn't involve highways until much later.

Couple that with a history of grand prix racing and they're just a better
motorcycle culture than us.

I found the SolderSeal wire connectors on the web and decided to give them
a try. It looks like a standard butt connector but you don't crimp it. It
has a ring of solder inside a transparent case. The casing is heat shrink.
After baring the ends of the wires you slip them in so that they are both
within the ring of solder and next to each other. Then you apply heat.

I had a crimp connector separate and needed to reconnect the ends. I
figured this was a great chance to give it a try. The package I bought had
100 connectors in various sizes. I found the correct size, stuck the wires
in, and hit it with a heat gun. It took a minute but the casing did the
heat shrink thing and then the solder melted to make a better connection
than any crimp connector.

They claim that the connection is waterproof because of the heat shrink
tubing which I don't doubt. They also show a picture of using a match for
heat. That might be doable if you have 20 matches but it looks like a
disposable lighter would be perfect. The kit is about the size of a
Snickers bar and I'm definitely putting one into each of my tank bags. It's
a much better option than twisting wires with some black tape and hoping
they'll hold together.

OMG, a Varadero on this side of the pond!!  This hand is showing!  😁  
It really begs to be added to your collection of Honda DP bikes.

I remember looking at one at a dealer in Holland. I have also seen them 
ride around over there.  When an Africa Twin is a super Transalp, the 
Varadero is a super Africa Twin.  It's very big and heavy.  I guess this 
was Honda's answer to the big Beamer GS's.

I think this guy in the east bay has brought several Africa Twins over 
from Europe over the years.

I bought some of those connectors from Wurth 15+ years ago so they've been around awhile. They worked fine for regular bike repairs. Obviously they wouldn't work well in a high heat environment if you can melt the solder with a match.

 Yes I buy solder ringed shrink tubes with "flow" by the hundreds for marine application.  They are superb until they overheat especially with direct 1500 degree flame to convince the solder to melt, and the shrink tube splits.   No big deal just do another one.Heat gun greatly increases likelihood of good results.The flow stuff coating the inside the shrink tube makes the waterproof seal and adds torsional stiffness.  I have some connections that survived abuse in the back of my little ocean boat well over 20 years old.  The wires degraded in the elements before the connectors have.  Reminds me I have some wiring to repair before salmon starts in a couple of weeks :)Love your new big bike.  Stop by when you finally decide you have to buy it.

The kit is about the size of a Snickers bar and I'm definitely putting one into each of my tank bags. It's a much better option than twisting wires with some black tape and hoping they'll hold together.

These are excellent. Never a problem, always works even in horrible
applications for 2 stroke woods bikes.

Thanks for the posting.  I have seen the connectors advertised quite a 
bit and found it intriguing.   This is the first time I have seen a 
comment from anyone using them.  It sounds like a good thing to have 
around the shop.  Most crimp connectors have opaque heat shrink.  
Solderseal lets you do a visual on the completed connection.

Looks like a valuable addition to a traveling kit. If you have a high-heat
wiring area to fix, you probably have a bigger problem than can be fixed on
the side of the road.
I'll be getting one to wire in my aux lighting. Good practice and easier
and less toxic fumes compared to a soldering iron.
