A few years back I was in Phoenix AZ, building Habitat for Humanity
houses and traveled daily to the site on a bus.

There was a sign on the bus prohibiting the carrying of firearms which
really got my attention regarding cultural differences between Toronto
and Phoenix.

Later, when I was back home and reflecting on the differences and also
the increasing number of shootings here, I came to realize that the only
difference was that up here the guns are hidden!

The irony is that making them illegal will reduce the numbers available
to
criminals.

I guess for us it's a concept that's difficult to understand, you don't
miss
what you never had. I would have thought that the majority of the
population, armed forces and the police excepted, have never seen or
held a
gun.
