[BaseCamp] 2017 micapeak.com pledge drive

Once each year we remind folks how they can send gifts for the upkeep
of micapeak.com, which powers this mailing list, assorted Web sites and
other services. It's that time!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gifts (in US dollars) can be made in two ways. The PREFERRED WAY is
to use PayPal. Log into http://www.paypal.com and click 'Send Money',
then put "marcl at micapeak.com" in the "To" box and fill in an amount.
Under 'What are you sending money for?', choose "I'm sending money to
family or friends" so PayPal will give us the whole amount (instead of
taking a small percentage for themselves). We prefer US dollars, but
other currencies work too. That's it!

The far LESS-desirable method is to send a check in $USD payable to
"H M LEWIS" (not "micapeak", the bank doesn't like that) to:

    H M Lewis
    4923 S Bellaire Ln
    Veradale, WA 99037-8220
    USA

NOTE: We gave up the PO Box we used to use a couple years ago.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's the request. For most of you, this note is a familiar reminder.
You know what to do, or not do, and you need read no further.

NEWS: For the past several years, we have used a service from McAfee
for filtering SPAM and viruses out of our inbound email. The providers
of that service have decided to cease operation of it, effective
January 17th, 2017. They gave us plenty of notice; we were happy with
their service. We switched to a different service on January 16th,
and it seems to be providing a similar level of filtering and SPAM
rejection, as well as reliability. While there was a fair bit of
behind-the-scenes work involved, most subscribers apparently didn't
notice anything different -- which is exactly what we had in mind.

That's the news for 2017. If you're still with me, however, I'll be a
tiny bit more verbose about what the Pledge Drive is...

The collection of domains (micapeak.com, wetleather.com, FJR1300.info,
gpdndg.com, and a dozen other sites), mailing lists and hardware which
we collectively call "micapeak" is running well. 2017 marks the 22nd
year we've been doing this. So far, so good. :-)

We renew our long-standing promise to keep micapeak.com, et al, running
and free of charge, no matter what. But if you'd care to throw us a few
bucks, we'd be grateful.

Carl and I know that some of the folks for whom this mailing list is an
important part of daily life would like to show their appreciation with
a modest gift. We encourage you to think about how much time you spend
each day following this list, or using micapeak's other resources. If it
seems worthwhile to you, then please consider sending something.

We will continue to operate the mailing lists, micapeak.com and other
Websites for the foreseeable future (we even have sections in our wills
to make sure the online stuff survives us). There is no obligation for
you to send anything, and you'll continue to get the email and Webpages
we serve for free. But we'd appreciate it if you'd help out...

Thanks in advance!

SPECIAL NOTE:

Let's not make this a topic of discussion on the mailing list, OK?
Send us a gift or don't, as it suits you, but we have neither the time
nor the energy to discuss the subject further than what you see above.
And we're sure your fellow subscribers would rather not have the list
itself cluttered with more than this notice on the subject.
Thanks!

(BTW -- I'll post this message just once more in about 2 or 3 weeks).
