not currently riding, but still have it, but I did same as I did my old 1980 KZ1000 I had before this, a 4 quart change, check it every few weeks cold, on trips, I had someone glance at level while I held bike as level as I could, after eating, so it would sit a few min, but thats like 500 miles between checks for peace of mind, it used a little, if I remember a 1/2 quart every 2K miles & I changed it every 3-4k miles
was just thinking & talking about this bike to a co-worker yesterday, & wanting to put it back on the road

Hi Bill,
The oil guage issue was discussed here when the list was new, i.e. many,
many years ago :) If I remember correctly, a few - including myself -
had this issue, but most didn't. I don't think a conclusion was ever
reached as to why it was so. Mine behaves in the following way:
When I change the oil and the oil filter I pour in exactly the amount of
fresh oil specified in the manual (3.5 litres). Then I know that the
engine has the amount of oil it is supposed to. After a short trip I
place the bike on its centerstand on the level garage floor. At that
point in time the oil glass will be full. After about 24 hours the upper
level of the oil becomes visible in the top of sight glass. After
another 24 hours the oil level finally settles in the middle of the
sight glass and does not go any lower. So when the engine (my engine)
has the correct amount of oil in it, the oil level in the sight glass is
not at the upper level (as you would expect) but rather right in between
max and min. It behaves that way any time the engine has been run, to
gauging oil level with a warm engine is really not possible. Why it is
so I don't know. I've never heard of any other motorcycle engine with
that behavior.
So how do I guage the oil level when I'm on a extended tour and ride
every day? I don't - because I can't. But I have a fairly good idea of
the oil consumption. If for example I have been riding 1000 km on the
motorway I know it tends to use a little oil, and I will give it a
deciliter or so, no matter what the sight glass shows (it will be full
anyway). If I ride on back roads only, I can wait another 1000 km before
adding oil. And apparently this behavior has no effect on its lifetime.
Mine has now 229.000 km (142.000 miles) on the odo and is still going
strong :)

>Happy New year to all. I still own and love my fast black '96, but one particular idiosyncrasy about the motor has always flummoxed me, namely checking the oil level. With every other motorcycle I've ever owned, the way I've always checked the oil level is with a warm engine. But after a ride with the GPz, when I check the sight glass it always seems "overfull" ie it completely fills the sight glass and always seems to take overnight to settle back down to where I can actually gauge the fullness. Because of this phenomenon, I usually fill the oil (only) to the halfway full mark when cold because I'm paranoid about overfilling and then causing internal damage to the bike from excessive foaming if the (over full) oil gets whipped by the crank throws.
