[Tanx] Friend looking for a TA for sale someplace in New England

You might prefer a chain to a driveshaft but that certainly doesn't make a chain better. Depends on the type of riding you like to do. For long distance riding, which is what BMWs were once designed for, it's hard to beat a driveshaft. Now they sell a number of models with chains or belts. Nothing cheap ($$) about modern o'ring chains & sprockets especially since they fall under regular maintenance. As for obsolete parts I can still order every part for my R90/S from any BMW dealer. Try that with your Transalp.

Yeah, but I can look at the chain and know there is nothing wrong with it.

Replacement is cheap and easy. Most people never go 50K. No special or obsolete parts. Just so much better.

I’d estimate 5 sets of sprockets or less if your scottoiler numbers are used. $500-700 for quality chain and sprockets and any shade tree mechanic could do the work themselves. Unsprung weight reduction would be greatly reduced.
I enjoyed my BMW but do not miss it.

The original driveshafts & rear drives in my 1976 R90/S (110K) & my 1973 R75/5 (50K+) are still going strong after all those years. How many chains & sprocket sets would that be & what would it have cost? That said I run Scottoilers on my Duc & my Aprilia & only had to adjust the chain once on long trips of 8-10k which included high speed runs out West.
