The thing you are asking about is called Proximity Alerts on the GPS. They are named the same as in Basecamp but controlled completely separately, on the GPS itself. In my Zumo 550 there is a setting where you enable the alarms, and program how far away you are from them until the alert rings. The trick is, you have to convert any waypoints into POIs before loading them to the GPS. The Zumo alerts on POIs only, not waypoints or shaping points. Many people use this feature for speed cameras, and when you go online, the speed camera POI files are always the most recently updated.

Following this with interest. Is it possible to set a geo fence that announces on the GPS? I have searched for this but only found reference to this on a hunter specific unit Garmin sells. It would seem to be an easy feature to integrate with the proximity settings. I admit I have not tried the proximity settings to see if they transfer to the GPS. Too cold outside! 6 degrees this morning.
