shifter seal

Charles,

That's a good idea since I have two more seals. I think I'll try one more
stock seal and then if that doesn't work try your o-ring within an o-ring
idea. Does anyone have a GPZ that doesn't leak "some" at the shifter?
Maybe mine is "special", but it seems like the shaft wiggles back and forth
more than it should for an o-ring to properly seal it. I can't think the
bearings inside are worn out with only ~ 5K on the clock, but maybe there is
a manufacturing defect inside mine....:-(. There is also a possibility I
"dinged" the shifter shaft getting the other seal out, as it was a bitch to
pull out. If there is a "ding" on the shaft maybe I could fill it in with a
little JB weld and sand it off smooth....just thinking as I really want the
GPZ to leak less than the Vrod (which leaks zero ;-), or the KLR which leaks
"acceptable", also from the shift shaft (damn Kawasaki's ;-)

John

John,

Here's one thing you can try. Many, many years ago, (okay, I'm dating
myself here), when I went to AMI, one of the instructors suggested a fix for
a leaky seal like yours. He suggested using a "slightly smaller, slightly
fatter" "O"-ring in place of the spring inside the seal. Obviously, you can
over do this weith one that is too small or too tight, but it does work.
Remember this was back in the days of real Swedish Husqvarna's which would
start leaking 15 minutes after you bought the bike so it was used a lot. I
ahve done this many times and it works. YMMV.
